Cellulite: What is it?
Cellulite is characterized by a fat later underneath the skin that bulges up between fibrous bands of tissue called septae. These bands tether the skin to the layer of tissue covering the muscle with the fat in-between. Eventually, the fibrous bands stiffen, holding the skin at an inflexible length while the fat trapped in between the bands continues to expand. This results in the characteristic ‘orange peel’-like appearance, which is often resistant to exercise and can worsen as our skin thins with age.
Cellulite is an important cosmetic concern in approximately 85% of women. While usually affecting the thighs and buttocks, it may also be present on the upper arms, lower abdomen or breasts. Other factors that may include the amount of cellulite you have may include the following:
- Poor diet or fad dieting
- Slow metabolism
- Lack of physical activity
- Hormonal changes
- Total body fat
- Skin colour and thickness
An effective treatment for Cellulite – Finally
Cellulaze is the only minimally invasive device for cellulite that addresses all structural issues causing cellulite. Approved by the FDA, it is considered the only devices for cellulite that can significantly improve appearance after only one treatment. This is due to Cynosure’s proprietary SideLightTM fibre delivery system combined with a powerful Nd:Yag 1440 nm wavelength laser.
Is it right for me?
As with other cosmetic procedures, cellulite reduction via Cellulaze is a personal decision. It should be done only to help you feel positive about your appearance rather than to fit a particular image or ideal.
Good candidates for Cellulazeare individuals who:
- Are physically healthy
- Are of averageor slightly-above average weight?
- Have cellulite or stubborn areas of fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise
- Are non-smokers
Cellulaze is designed to improve skin contours and is not a replacement for healthy eating habits and exercise.
How a Cellulaze treatment is performed
The Cellulaze device is used while the patient is under a general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Dr. Dawes will make small incisions in the skin; the SideLightfibre is then inserted through the incision and energy is then applied to the fat underneath the skin. The resultant heat disrupts and breaks down fat bulges. The SideLightfibre then thermally cuts the fibrous bands tethering the skin down, creating smoother looking skin. Finally, the same fiber is oriented such that the laser heats the skin underneath, promoting thickening of the skin via new collagen formation.
Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks, during which time you may experience pain, swelling and/or bruising. You may be required to wear compression garments to reduce swelling. Best results are seen at 3 months, once the skin has thickened due to new collagen formation. It may take 6 months or longer for swelling to subside completely.
